Use Your Loaf-ers: The Sloane Ranger Returns

The Sloane Ranger – a term coined back in the 80s to describe posh Londoners hanging out near Sloane Square in Chelsea, is relevant again thanks to Kate Middleton and the girls from Made in Chelsea, who are making the sloaney look ‘cool’ again.

Of course Princess Diana was queen Sloane back in the day and although fashions have changed and Sloanes are less cashmere cardis, pearls, pashminas and alice bands than before, there is still a definite affluent ‘look’. Think designer polo shirts with collars upturned and deck shoes for the boys, neat little blazers from Zara and designer handbags and dresses complementing windswept blonde/glossy brown long hair for the girls…and loafers!

This season, mix the sloaney loafer with ‘Heritage’ trend staples like DAKS checks, tartan skirts or YSL-style shirt + skirt, Burberry-style trench or even over-sized woollen scarf, as seen at Etro for a look that’s all the rage – or should we make that ranger.

There’s plenty of copy-cat looks on the high street, handy for winter with chunky knits and cosy colours – Topshop has LOTS of loafers!

And if you think this is still a bit stuffy, get on board this tricky trend channeling the swinging 60s Kings Road with iconic mod-style Chelsea boots. Crazy-coloured flat loafers are also great for cross trending – handy for ticking the heritage, colour blocking and androgynous A/W11 looks.
