Maarten Van Der Horst x Topshop
Maarten Van Der Horst exploded onto the LFW scene showing at Lulu Kennedy’s legendary Fashion East showcase and along with Stella McCartney, Maarten has made Hawaiian-style prints one of the hottest SS12 trends.
He cuts his shirt dresses and functional printed separates so they are ‘flattering and boxy’ and while his prints are his calling card, he also pays plays with proportions and pays astonishing attention to detail – no wonder then that people are clamouring to get their hands on his pieces for Topshop with prices starting at £30.
They are startlingly similar to the catwalk pieces too and I am head-over-heels for the amazing printed shorts. Talking to Topshop about his love of Hawaiian prints, Maarten said: “I love the Hawaiian shirt and how humble it is in regards to the detailing and I love how loud it is in regards to the print. It’s so wrong! We have such weird associations with the Hawaiian shirt and it makes it so much fun to work with. For me, the Hawiian print symbolises my wish to escape boring daily routines, which is the perfectsymbol for what fashion means to me; escapism!”
