Happy Birthday Havaianas!
I don’t know about you, but ever since we club Havaiana we were sold and haven’t contemplated buying cheap and disposable foamy flip flops since! Well, it appears that plenty of people have jumped on the Brazilian bandwagon before us as the brand is celebrating its 50th birthday.
The flip flop started life as a ‘new shoe in the shape of a slingshot’ back in 1962 and now is the trendiest flip flop brand about town. Amazingly just a year after launch, 1,000 pairs of Havaianas were sold per day and 94% of Brazilians apparently own a pair…well they do have some pretty nice beaches!
Fast forward to the millennium and people all over the world went crazy for the famous flip flops. Last year, there were Havaiana shops in 85 countries and get this, 190 million pairs of flip flops were sold…that’s 500,000 a day and 21,500 an hour!
So according to Havaiana’s calculations they have shifted a staggering 4 billion pairs of rubber sandals over the years and they would stretch 40 times around the world if lined up. We reckon they should rename the shoe – hardly a flip FLOP.
To celebrate the big day was on the 15 June, which was National Flip Flop Day (of course) but you can buy limited edition birthday Havaianas with all the cash going to UNICEF projects in Brazil. Win.
